Description
Meet Sylvie, a young girl who finds the “what-ifs” of life much too scary to handle. She hides in a small room behind a door, her dreams carefully locked away in a suitcase except for a few precious moments when she lets them run free just to remind her of what life was like on the other side of the door.
Mysterious visitors arrive, each with their own motivations. Some, like Curiosity and Love, encourage Sylvie to step out from behind the door and once again be a part of life’s adventures. A younger version of herself reminds Sylvie of the joy and fearlessness she enjoyed before she locked herself away. Other visitors, like Self-Pity and Regret, taunt Sylvie, telling her to stay be-hind the door where she feels safe. But is Sylvie really safe behind the door? What does she give up for a life of isolation? And when her other visitors have left , can the Good Shepherd fill Sylvie with the hope and courage that she needs to finally become the girl beyond the door?

I read this beautiful story to my 6th grade English classes. They loved it. As a follow up activity, I had them create a “visitor” of their own. My top favorites were “self esteem” and “faith”. The kids enjoyed the book and the project!

my 6th grade English teacher read the book to us and I simply fell in love with it. Two days after we finished, we Skyped with the author and asked some questions and it was an amazing experience!!!

This book is simply incredible. And there-in lies the heart of this book’s genius; its ability to communicate a delicate and profound truth in such an eloquent and accessible way. Christie Miller’s writing touches on the child in all of us, still standing scared behind the door, and introduces us (perhaps for the first time) to the only one who can free us from its grasp. Would highly recommend.
